Ashes and Seeds
On the 9th commemoration of the Rohingya genocide, Protect the Rohingya is excited to launch Ashes and Seeds, a seven part popular education series for Rohingya learners. The series begins from a simple principle: people who have been displaced, denied citizenship and excluded from formal education are not empty vessels waiting for experts to give them knowledge. They carry histories, memories, skills and ways of understanding the world. Through storytelling, discussion and comparison, the series connects the Rohingya experience to wider histories of colonialism, dispossession, peasant resistance, women’s and youth organising, incomplete freedom and the struggle to imagine a different future.
It draws on the tradition of popular pedagogy associated with Paulo Freire and liberation movements across the Global South. Education is treated not simply as the transfer of facts, but as a collective practice of naming the forces that shape people’s lives. Each episode moves between history and lived experience, inviting learners to ask questions, tell their own stories and locate the Rohingya struggle within global movements for land, dignity, belonging and freedom.
Ashes and Seeds is presented by historian & labour activist Dr. Vashna Jagarnath. She is also the founding director and CEO of ImfundoHub, an education platform which seeks to address the education crisis in South Africa.
